करना gives कर, खाना gives खा and पढ़ना gives पढ़. Add endings or helper words to the stem to build tenses: पढ़ता है, पढ़ रहा है.
Foundations - Noun Gender
Learn each noun with its gender: कमरा (room) is masculine and किताब (book) is feminine. The gender decides the form of many adjectives and verbs.

Read each consonant with a short a unless a vowel sign changes it: क is ka, का is kaa, कि is ki. At the end of a word the short a is usually silent, so कमल is kamal.
Foundations - Singular and Plural Nouns
Masculine -आ nouns change to -ए (लड़का, लड़के), feminine nouns add -इयाँ or -एँ (लड़कियाँ, किताबें), and most other masculine nouns stay the same (घर, घर).
Foundations - Tense and Aspect
Choose how: a habit (जाता), in progress (जा रहा) or completed (गया). Then choose when: है for now, था for the past. जाता है means goes, and जा रहा था means was going.
Foundations - Verbs With and Without Objects
खाना (to eat) has an object: you eat something. आना (to come) does not. In completed forms, a verb that can take an object puts ने after the subject, even when the object is not said: मैंने खाना खाया, मैंने देखा. A verb with no object never does: मैं आया.
