आप कहाँ रहते हैं? means Where do you live?

How It Works

कहाँ means where. Put it before the verb, where the place would go.

Question	Answer
आप कहाँ रहते हैं?	मैं लखनऊ में रहता हूँ।
चाबी कहाँ है?	चाबी मेज़ पर है।

With जाना (go) and आना (come), कहाँ alone means where to: तुम कहाँ जा रहे हो? (Where are you going?). Hindi needs no word for to here.

Add a postposition for other meanings. कहाँ से means where from: आप कहाँ से हैं? (Where are you from?). कहाँ तक means how far: यह बस कहाँ तक जाती है? (How far does this bus go?)

Do not put में after कहाँ. It already means in what place.

Answers usually have a place with में or पर, or a word such as यहाँ (here) or वहाँ (there).
