Out of or Among

में से picks one or some out of a group, or takes something out of a container.

How It Works

में से combines में (in) and से (from), so it means from inside something. There are two main uses.

From a group. It picks out one or some members: इन किताबों में से कौन-सी आपकी है? (Which of these books is yours?) Scores and shares use it too: दस में से आठ सवाल सही थे (Eight out of ten answers were right).

Out of a container. It shows something coming out: डिब्बे में से एक लड्डू निकालो (Take a laddoo out of the box).

The noun before में से changes as it does before any postposition: किताबों में से, बच्चों में से. Pronouns are written joined to में: इनमें से, उनमें से, हममें से, तुममें से. दोनों में से means of the two: दोनों में से कोई भी चलेगा (Either of the two will do).

    इनमें से picks one from a group.

  2. हममें से किसी को भी रास्ता नहीं पता था।

    None of us knew the way.

    हममें से means of us.

  3. दस में से आठ बच्चे पास हो गए।

    Eight out of ten children passed.

    में से gives a share: eight out of ten.

  4. उसने बैग में से अपना फ़ोन निकाला।

    She took her phone out of the bag.

    With a container, में से means out of.

  5. दोनों में से कोई भी रंग चलेगा।

    Either of the two colors will do.

    दोनों में से means of the two.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving a plural noun in its plain form before में से.

    इन किताबें में से एक चुनो।
    इन किताबों में से एक चुनो।

    Before a postposition, plural nouns end in -ओं.
