Going to a Place
With जाना and आना, the place you go to usually takes no word for to: मैं घर जा रहा हूँ.
How It Works
English says go to Delhi. Hindi simply names the place before जाना, आना or पहुँचना, with no word for to:
- मैं घर जा रहा हूँ (I'm going home).
(She'll come to Delhi tomorrow).
(When do you get to the office?)
This works for cities, countries and everyday places such as घर, स्कूल, दफ़्तर, बाज़ार, अस्पताल and स्टेशन. The question word कहाँ works the same way: आप कहाँ जा रहे हैं?
A few goals do need a postposition:
- A person: use के पास, or के यहाँ for someone's home.
- Into a room or a vehicle: use
- Only toward a place: use की ओर or की तरफ़.
Do not mix up घर (home, as a goal) with घर पर (at home): मैं घर जा रहा हूँ, but मैं घर पर हूँ.
