मेरे दो भाई हैं
Saying You Have Family
Hindi says "my two brothers are" to mean I have two brothers: मेरे दो भाई हैं.
How It Works
For things you own, Hindi uses के पास: मेरे पास एक साइकिल है. For family members and friends, it uses the possessive words instead. मेरे दो भाई हैं means I have two brothers.
The possessive matches the family member, not the owner. Use मेरा for one male relative, मेरी for one or more female relatives, and मेरे for several males or a mixed group. The verb is है for one person and हैं for more than one.
| Hindi | Meaning |
|---|---|
| मेरा एक भाई है। | I have a brother. |
| मेरी एक बहन है। | I have a sister. |
| मेरे दो भाई हैं। | I have two brothers. |
| मेरी दो बहनें हैं। | I have two sisters. |
The same pattern works for any owner: उसकी एक बेटी है (he or she has a daughter), रीमा के तीन बच्चे हैं (Reema has three children). To say you have none, use कोई ... नहीं: मेरी कोई बहन नहीं है.
For a respected elder, speakers often use the plural form even for one person: मेरे एक चाचा हैं, वे डॉक्टर हैं (I have an uncle who is a doctor).
