जितना ... उतना
As Much as
जितना ... उतना links two amounts or degrees: as much as, or the more ... the more.
How It Works
जितना means as much as, and उतना means that much. Together they make three common patterns.
- Matching amounts: जितनी चाय चाहिए, उतनी लो. Take as much tea as you need.
- The more ... the more: जितना पढ़ोगे, उतना सीखोगे. The more you study, the more you'll learn.
- Not as ... as: यह काम जितना आसान दिखता है, उतना आसान नहीं है. This job isn't as easy as it looks.
| Masculine | Feminine | |
|---|---|---|
| One | जितना, उतना | जितनी, उतनी |
| More than one | जितने, उतने | जितनी, उतनी |
The two words agree separately. In जितने लोग आए, हमने उतनी कुर्सियाँ लगाईं, जितने goes with लोग and उतनी with कुर्सियाँ. When they describe an action rather than a noun, use जितना and उतना.
A useful fixed phrase is जितना हो सके, as much as you can: जितना हो सके, आराम कीजिए.
