निर्णय लेना / प्रयास करना
Formal Verb Phrases
निर्णय लेना means to decide and प्रयास करना means to try: a formal noun plus a common verb.
How It Works
Many Hindi actions are a noun plus a common verb. The formal ones are everywhere in news, offices and speeches, and each has an everyday partner.
| Formal | Everyday | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| निर्णय लेना | फ़ैसला करना | to decide |
| प्रयास करना | कोशिश करना | to try |
| सहायता प्रदान करना | मदद देना | to provide help |
| भाग लेना | हिस्सा लेना | to take part |
| चर्चा करना | बात करना | to discuss |
प्रदान करना means to give or grant, and it is formal. The person who receives takes को: किसानों को सहायता प्रदान की गई (Help was given to the farmers).
Two rules make these phrases work:
- Agreement. In the past with ने, the verb agrees with the noun in the phrase, because that noun is the object. निर्णय is masculine: समिति ने निर्णय लिया. चर्चा is feminine: हमने चर्चा की.
- Postposition. Each phrase has a fixed way to link what it is about: प्रतियोगिता में भाग लेना, विषय पर चर्चा करना, समझने का प्रयास करना.
Learn each phrase together with its postposition, as you would a new verb.
