Word Order and Emphasis
Moving words changes emphasis, not meaning: in किताब मैंने पढ़ी, the focus falls on मैंने.
How It Works
English often needs extra words for emphasis (It was Reena who ...). Hindi can do much of this just by changing the order.
| Position | Effect | Example |
|---|---|---|
| First | topic: what we are talking about | चाय मैं नहीं पीता |
| Right before the verb | focus: the new or contrasting part | यह किताब रीना ने लिखी है |
| After the verb, in speech | afterthought or strong feeling | बहुत अच्छा गाती है वह! |
Points to keep in mind:
- Move whole phrases. A postposition always stays right after its noun: रीना ने, घर में, दोस्तों के साथ.
- Agreement does not change. In both रीना ने यह किताब लिखी and यह किताब रीना ने लिखी, the verb agrees with किताब.
- In speech, the focused word usually gets more stress.
Words like ही, भी and तो also mark focus and topic, and they often combine with a change of order: चाय तो मैं नहीं पीता.
Examples (5)
- रीना ने यह किताब लिखी है।
Reena has written this book.
Neutral order: doer, object, verb.
- यह किताब रीना ने लिखी है।
It was Reena who wrote this book.
The book becomes the topic, and रीना, right before the verb, gets the focus.
- चाय मैं नहीं पीता, कॉफ़ी पीता हूँ।
Tea I don't drink; I drink coffee.
Putting चाय first sets it up for the contrast with कॉफ़ी.
- मैं दिल्ली कल जाऊँगा, आज नहीं।
I'll go to Delhi tomorrow, not today.
कल, just before the verb, carries the focus.
- बहुत अच्छा गाती है वह!
She sings so well!
In speech, putting the subject after the verb adds feeling.
