का / की / के

Showing Possession

Level 1Sounds Like kā, kī aura kē

राम का घर means Ram's house; राम की किताब means Ram's book.

How It Works

का, की and के work like 's or of. The owner comes first, then the marker, then the thing owned: रवि की किताब (Ravi's book), भारत की राजधानी (the capital of India).

Thing ownedFormExample
masculine, oneकामीरा का कमरा
feminine, one or moreकीमीरा की किताब, मीरा की किताबें
masculine, more than oneकेमीरा के दोस्त

The owner does not matter. A man's book is रवि की किताब, and a woman's room is मीरा का कमरा.

Before a postposition, का becomes के: मीरा का कमरा, but मीरा के कमरे में (in Meera's room).

The owner is followed by का, so it takes the form used before a postposition: लड़का becomes लड़के in लड़के की किताब (the boy's book).

Examples (5)

  1. रवि की किताब नई है।

    Ravi's book is new.

की matches feminine किताब, not Ravi.

  2. मीरा का कमरा बड़ा है।

    Meera's room is big.

का matches masculine कमरा, not Meera.

  3. मीरा के दोस्त यहाँ हैं।

    Meera's friends are here.

    के matches masculine plural दोस्त.

  4. मैं मीरा के कमरे में हूँ।

    I'm in Meera's room.

    Before में, का becomes के.

  5. भारत की राजधानी दिल्ली है।

The capital of India is Delhi.

की also means of; राजधानी is feminine.

Common Mistakes

  • Matching का to the owner instead of the thing owned.

    रवि का किताब नई है।
    रवि की किताब नई है।

किताब is feminine, so it takes की even though रवि is a man.
