Joining with and
और means and between words or sentences, and more or another before a noun.
How It Works
और joins two words: माँ और पापा, चाय और समोसा. It also joins two full sentences: मैं पढ़ता हूँ और मेरी बहन खेलती है.
With three or more items, put और only before the last one: चाय, दूध और चीनी.
When और joins two people as the subject, the verb is plural. A mixed group of men and women takes the masculine plural: रवि और मीरा तैयार हैं. Two women take the feminine plural: रीमा और सलमा आ रही हैं.
Before a noun, और means more: और चाय लीजिए (Have some more tea). After एक it means one more or another: एक और रोटी. In shops you will hear और कुछ? (Anything else?).
Context makes the meaning clear. In मुझे और पानी चाहिए, there is nothing to join पानी to, so और means more.
