के बिना

Without Something

Level 2Sounds Like kē binā

के बिना means without and follows the thing or person that is missing.

How It Works

के बिना names what is missing. It has two orders, and both are common:

चीनी के बिनाबिना चीनी केwithout sugar
चश्मे के बिनाबिना चश्मे केwithout glasses
टिकट के बिनाबिना टिकट केwithout a ticket

The noun changes as before any postposition: चश्मा → चश्मे के बिना, बच्चे → बच्चों के बिना. के stays के even after a feminine noun: चाबी के बिना. With pronouns, put बिना last: मेरे बिना, आपके बिना, उसके बिना.

When the phrase describes a noun, end it with का, की or के to match that noun: बिना चीनी की चाय (tea without sugar), बिना टिकट के यात्री (passengers without tickets).

The final के is often left off after बिना, especially in speech and on signs: बिना टिकट, बिना चीनी.

To say without doing something, Hindi uses बिना with a verb form ending in -ए: बिना पूछे (without asking). That pattern has its own entry.
