फिर means then (पहले चाय, फिर काम) or again (फिर मिलेंगे, see you again).

How It Works

फिर has two everyday meanings.

Then, next: it starts the next step. पहले often marks the first step: पहले चाय पियो, फिर काम करो (Drink your tea first, then work). In a story, फिर क्या हुआ? means And then what happened?

Again: with a single action it means once more: आज फिर बारिश हो रही है (It's raining again today). फिर से makes again extra clear: फिर से बोलिए (Please say that again).

Some everyday phrases:

फिर मिलेंगे। See you again.
फिर कभी। Some other time.
फिर भी: even so (it has its own entry).

फिर shows order, not cause. To say so or that's why, use इसलिए.
