Verbs Made with करना and होना

Level 2Sounds Like śurū karanā aura śurū hōnā

शुरू करना means to start something; शुरू होना means to begin. The same pairing works with बंद, ख़त्म, साफ़ and तैयार.

How It Works

Hindi makes many verbs from two words. The first word, a noun or adjective, stays the same. The second word, करना or होना, changes like any verb.

Word+ करना (someone does it)+ होना (it happens)
शुरू (start)शुरू करना, to start somethingशुरू होना, to begin
ख़त्म (end)ख़त्म करना, to finish somethingख़त्म होना, to end
बंद (closed)बंद करना, to close or switch offबंद होना, to close
साफ़ (clean)साफ़ करना, to cleanसाफ़ होना, to get clean
तैयार (ready)तैयार करना, to prepareतैयार होना, to get ready

With करना, the person is the subject and the thing is the object: मैं खाना तैयार करती हूँ. In the simple past it takes ने, and the verb agrees with the object: रीमा ने कमरा साफ़ किया.

With होना, the thing is the subject and there is no ने: क्लास नौ बजे शुरू होती है, फ़िल्म ख़त्म हुई.

Examples (5)

  1. हम नौ बजे काम शुरू करते हैं।

    We start work at nine.

With करना, we start something: काम.

  2. फ़िल्म छह बजे शुरू होगी।

The movie will start at six.

With होना, the film itself begins.

  3. दरवाज़ा बंद करो।

    Close the door.

बंद करना needs someone to do it.

  4. बाज़ार रात दस बजे बंद होता है।

The market closes at ten at night.

बंद होना says the market closes; no one is named.

  5. रीमा ने कमरा साफ़ किया।

    Reema cleaned the room.

In the past, करना takes ने and agrees with कमरा.

Common Mistakes

  • Using करना when the thing starts by itself.

    क्लास नौ बजे शुरू करती है।
    क्लास नौ बजे शुरू होती है।

A class does not start something else; it begins, so use होना.
