इससे पहले कि
Before Something Can Happen
इससे पहले कि means before something happens, often with a sense of hurry.
How It Works
इससे पहले कि is literally before this, that. It introduces an event that has not happened yet, and the main clause says what happens first: इससे पहले कि बारिश शुरू हो, कपड़े अंदर ले आओ। (Bring the clothes in before the rain starts.)
The verb after कि is in the subjunctive, because the event is still ahead: हो, जाए, जागें. In stories about the past you will also hear the -ता form: इससे पहले कि मैं कुछ कह पाती, उसने फ़ोन काट दिया (Before I could say anything, she hung up).
The clause often suggests hurry or prevention: do this before something can happen. It can also come second: कपड़े अंदर ले आओ, इससे पहले कि बारिश शुरू हो.
Compare -ने से पहले, which uses the infinitive and is shorter: खाने से पहले हाथ धोओ (Wash your hands before eating). Use -ने से पहले for a simple sequence, especially with the same subject. Use इससे पहले कि for a full clause with its own subject, or when you want to stress the hurry.
