ज़रूरी है says something is necessary: यह काम ज़रूरी है, समय पर पहुँचना ज़रूरी है.

How It Works

ज़रूरी means necessary or important. It is an adjective that never changes; only the verb after it does.

To name an action, use the -ना form and put it first: पानी पीना ज़रूरी है. Hindi needs no word for the English it.

To say who needs it, use के लिए: मेरे लिए आराम करना ज़रूरी है (It's important for me to rest). To say that someone must do it, Hindi can also use का with the -ना verb: आपका आना ज़रूरी है (It's important that you come). That pattern has its own entry.

Do not mix up ज़रूरी (necessary) and ज़रूरत (need, a feminine noun). ज़रूरत takes की ... है: मुझे पानी की ज़रूरत है (I need water).

    नहीं before है gives not necessary.

  • Using the adjective ज़रूरी where the noun ज़रूरत is needed.

    मुझे पानी की ज़रूरी है।
    मुझे पानी की ज़रूरत है।

    की ... है needs a noun, ज़रूरत. ज़रूरी is the adjective.
