पता होना

Knowing a Fact

Level 2Sounds Like patā hōnā

The person who knows takes को: मुझे पता है (I know), मुझे नहीं पता (I don't know).

How It Works

पता means knowledge of something (it also means an address). With को and है it means to know a fact: मुझे पता है, I know.

HindiMeaning
मुझे पता है।I know.
मुझे नहीं पता। / मुझे पता नहीं।I don't know.
क्या आपको पता है?Do you know?
मुझे पता था।I knew.
मुझे कल पता चला।I found out yesterday.

The knower does not change the verb: a man and a woman both say मुझे पता है and मुझे पता था. To say what you know, put it before पता: मुझे रास्ता पता है (I know the way). पता चलना means to find out.

मालूम works the same way and means the same: मुझे मालूम नहीं. Both are common in everyday speech.

Use this pattern for facts and information. To know a person, use जानना (मैं रीमा को जानता हूँ). To know a skill or a language, use आना (मुझे हिंदी आती है).

Examples (5)

  1. हाँ, मुझे पता है।

    Yes, I know.

    The knower takes को: मुझे.

  2. मुझे उसका नंबर नहीं पता।

    I don't know his number.

In the negative, है is usually dropped.

  3. क्या आपको स्टेशन का रास्ता पता है?

Do you know the way to the station?

What you know comes before पता.

  4. रीमा को सब पता था।

    Reema knew everything.

था puts the knowing in the past.

  5. माफ़ कीजिए, मुझे मालूम नहीं।

    Sorry, I don't know.

    मालूम works just like पता.

Common Mistakes

  • Making the knower the subject.

    मैं पता हूँ।
    मुझे पता है।

पता is not a verb. The person takes को, and the verb is है.
