सबसे
The Most or Least
सबसे means the most. Put it right before the adjective: सबसे अच्छा means the best.
How It Works
सबसे is built from सब (all) and से (than). So मीरा सबसे लंबी है literally says Meera is tall compared with everyone. English adds -est or most; Hindi just puts सबसे before the normal adjective.
| Hindi | English |
|---|---|
| सबसे अच्छा | the best |
| सबसे बड़ा | the biggest |
| सबसे ज़्यादा | the most |
| सबसे कम | the least |
To name the group, use में (in) or का, की, के (of): कक्षा में सबसे लंबी (the tallest in the class), शहर का सबसे अच्छा होटल (the best hotel in the city). Often the group is clear from the situation, and you can leave it out.
सबसे itself never changes, but an adjective ending in -आ still agrees with its noun: सबसे बड़ा कमरा, सबसे बड़ी गाड़ी, सबसे बड़े कमरे. सबसे also works before adverbs: वह सबसे तेज़ दौड़ता है (He runs the fastest).
To compare just two things, use से on its own: यह उससे सस्ता है (This is cheaper than that).
