पर

On or at

Level 1Sounds Like para

मेज़ पर means on the table, and घर पर means at home.

How It Works

पर means on or at. It comes after the noun: मेज़ पर (on the table), छत पर (on the roof).

  • On a surface: किताब मेज़ पर है (The book is on the table).
  • At a spot: वह दरवाज़े पर है (He's at the door), मैं बस स्टॉप पर हूँ (I'm at the bus stop).
  • Fixed phrases: घर पर (at home), काम पर (at work).

Compare में, which means inside: किताब बैग में है (The book is in the bag), but किताब बैग पर है (The book is on the bag).

The noun before पर takes the form used before a postposition: दरवाज़ा becomes दरवाज़े पर. Other singular nouns stay the same: मेज़ पर.

English at does not always become पर. For cities and countries, use में: मैं दिल्ली में हूँ (I'm in Delhi).

In speech, पर often sounds like पे: घर पे. Write पर.
