-ने को कहना

Telling Someone to Do Something

Level 3Sounds Like nē kō kahanā

Person + से + -ने को कहना = tell someone to do: मुझसे सोने को कहा (told me to sleep).

How It Works

English says tell someone to do something. Hindi builds it from three parts:

PersonActionVerb
मुझसेसोने कोकहा
रीमा सेआने कोकहूँगी
हमसेअंदर आने कोकहा

The person takes से. With कहना, the person spoken to takes से: मुझसे, आपसे, रीमा से. This is the same से as in माँ से कहो (Tell Mom).

The action takes -ने को. Change -ना to -ने and add को: सोने को, आने को. Many speakers use के लिए instead: माँ ने मुझसे सोने के लिए कहा. Both are correct.

The past. कहना takes ने in the past. There is no plain object to agree with, so the verb stays कहा: माँ ने मुझसे सोने को कहा.

Another way. You can also report the actual words with कि: माँ ने कहा कि सो जाओ (Mom said, go to sleep).

Examples (5)

  1. माँ ने मुझसे सोने को कहा।

Mom told me to go to sleep.

मुझसे is the person told; सोने को is the action.

  2. डॉक्टर ने मुझसे आराम करने को कहा है।

The doctor has told me to rest.

कहा है stays in the default form.

उन्होंने can be a plural or a respectful singular.

The person told can come first for emphasis.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving the action in the -ना form.

    माँ ने मुझसे सोना कहा।
    माँ ने मुझसे सोने को कहा।

The action needs the -ने form plus को, or के लिए.
