जैसा ... वैसा

Just as ... So

Level 4Sounds Like jaisā ... vaisā

जैसा ... वैसा links a kind or a way of doing to a matching one: the kind that ..., that kind.

How It Works

This pair works like जो ... वह, but for kind and manner instead of a person or thing.

  • Kind: जैसा कमरा हमें चाहिए, वैसा यहाँ नहीं है. They don't have the kind of room we need here.
  • Way: जैसे मैंने बताया है, वैसे ही कीजिए. Please do it just the way I explained.

For a kind, each word changes like बड़ा to agree with the noun in its own clause: जैसा, जैसी, जैसे and वैसा, वैसी, वैसे. For a way of doing, use the -ए forms जैसे ... वैसे. With no noun, जैसा ... वैसा can also mean what: जैसा मैंने कहा, वैसा करो (Do what I said). Adding ही makes it exact: वैसे ही (just that way).

The second half can drop वैसा when it would only repeat: जैसा आप कहें (Whatever you say), जैसा मैंने कहा था, बारिश हो गई (Just as I said, it rained).

Many proverbs use the full pair: जैसा देश, वैसा भेष (When in Rome, do as the Romans do) and जैसी करनी, वैसी भरनी (You reap what you sow).

Keep it apart from जैसे ही, which means as soon as.
