Guessing with होगा

Level 3Sounds Like hōgā (anumāna)

होगा, होगी, होंगे or होंगी can mean must be: वह घर पर होगा (He must be at home).

How It Works

होगा usually means will be: कल छुट्टी होगी (Tomorrow will be a holiday). But Hindi also uses it to guess about the present. वह घर पर होगा can mean he must be at home, or he's probably at home.

SubjectFormExample
masculine singularहोगावह घर पर होगा
feminine singularहोगीवह घर पर होगी
masculine plural, आपहोंगेआप थके होंगे
feminine pluralहोंगीवे थकी होंगी

How do you know it is a guess? Look at the situation. If the sentence is about now and the speaker cannot check, it is a guess. Words like शायद (maybe) or ज़रूर (surely) make it clearer.

Use it for things you are working out: the time (नौ बजे होंगे), someone's age (वे साठ साल की होंगी), or where someone is.

The respectful plural works here too: रीमा की माँ साठ साल की होंगी uses होंगी for respect.

At the next level, होगा joins other verbs to guess about actions: वह आ गया होगा (He must have arrived).

Examples (5)

  1. वह इस समय घर पर होगा।

He must be at home right now.

इस समय (now) shows this is a guess, not the future.

  2. आप बहुत थके होंगे।

    You must be very tired.

होंगे goes with आप; a woman would hear आप थकी होंगी.

  3. अभी नौ बजे होंगे।

It must be about nine o'clock now.

The speaker is guessing the time.

  4. रीमा की माँ लगभग साठ साल की होंगी।

Reema's mother must be about sixty.

होंगी shows respect for the mother.

  5. दरवाज़े पर कोई है। शायद डाकिया होगा।

Someone's at the door. It's probably the postman.

    शायद makes the guess clear.

Common Mistakes

  • Not matching होगा to the subject.
