Meeting, Finding and Receiving

Level 2Sounds Like milanā

Person + से + मिलना = meet; person + को + thing + मिलना = get or find.

How It Works

मिलना has two main patterns. Learn them side by side.

MeaningPatternExample
meetperson + सेमैं रीमा से मिला
get, find, receiveperson + कोमुझे नौकरी मिली

Meeting. The verb agrees with the person who meets: a woman says मैं रीमा से मिली. If both people are in the subject, no से is needed: हम स्टेशन पर मिले (We met at the station). आपसे मिलकर ख़ुशी हुई means nice to meet you.

Getting, finding, receiving. The thing is the subject, and the verb agrees with it: मुझे नौकरी मिली (feminine नौकरी), मुझे पैसे मिले (plural पैसे). The person takes को: मुझे, रीमा को. English uses different verbs for this, such as get, find or receive. Hindi uses मिलना for all of them.

Being available. With no person at all, मिलना says where you can get something: यहाँ अच्छी चाय मिलती है.

मिल जाना adds the sense of finally finding: मुझे अपनी चाबी मिल गई (I found my key).

Examples (5)

  1. मुझे अपनी चाबी मिल गई।

    I found my key.

The key is the subject, so मिल गई is feminine.

  2. रीमा को एक चिट्ठी मिली।

    Reema got a letter.

    मिली agrees with feminine चिट्ठी.

  3. यहाँ अच्छी चाय मिलती है।

You can get good tea here.

With no person, मिलना says something is available.

  4. मैं कल रीमा से मिली।

    I met Reema yesterday.

The speaker is female, so मिली.

  5. आपसे मिलकर बहुत ख़ुशी हुई।

It was really nice to meet you.

A set phrase built from मिलना.

Common Mistakes

  • Using ने for getting something.

    मैंने नौकरी मिली।
    मुझे नौकरी मिली।

For getting or finding, the person takes को: मुझे. मिलना never takes ने.
