Each and Every

Level 2Sounds Like hara aura pratyēka

हर means every or each: हर दिन (every day). प्रत्येक is its formal partner.

How It Works

हर means every or each. It never changes form, and the noun after it is singular.

The verb is singular too: हर बच्चा अलग होता है (Every child is different). सब बच्चे अलग होते हैं says the same thing with a plural.

Before a postposition, the noun changes as usual: हर कमरे में (in every room). With a day name, को is optional after हर: मैं हर सोमवार (को) जिम जाता हूँ (I go to the gym every Monday).

प्रत्येक also means each, but it belongs to formal writing: notices, forms and exam papers. प्रत्येक प्रश्न के चार अंक हैं (Each question carries four marks). In speech, use हर.
