-ने पर
On Doing Something
The -ने form plus पर means on doing or when something happens, often with a sense of because or if.
How It Works
-ने पर packs a whole when or if clause into a short phrase.
- पूछने पर उसने सब बता दिया. When asked, she told us everything.
- ज़रूरत पड़ने पर मुझे फ़ोन करना. Call me if you need anything.
- बटन दबाने पर दरवाज़ा खुलेगा. The door opens when you press the button.
Build it from the -ने form of the verb plus पर. The phrase itself doesn't show tense; the main verb does.
When the -ने action has its own doer, put that doer in the possessive with के: उसके आने पर (when he arrives), माँ के कहने पर (because Mom said so), आपके पूछने पर (since you ask). This is very common in polite speech and writing.
Depending on the sentence, the phrase means when, if or because. Instructions and notices use it a lot: टिकट दिखाने पर ही अंदर जाने दिया जाएगा (You'll be let in only when you show a ticket).
Compare -ते ही, which stresses that the next thing happens immediately.
