-ने के लिए = in order to: सीखने के लिए (to learn).

How It Works

के लिए means for. With a noun it gives माँ के लिए (for mother). With the -ने form of a verb it gives a purpose: मैं हिंदी सीखने के लिए रोज़ पढ़ता हूँ (I study every day to learn Hindi).

What something is for. The phrase can also describe a use: यह पानी पीने के लिए है (This water is for drinking).

Who is meant to do it. A possessive before the verb names the person: बच्चों के पढ़ने के लिए किताबें रखी हैं (Books have been set out for the children to read).

With आना and जाना. With verbs of coming and going, के लिए is often left out: हम रीमा से मिलने आए हैं (We've come to meet Reema). Both forms are correct.

For a purpose with its own subject and verb, Hindi uses ताकि and a full clause: धीरे बोलिए ताकि सब समझ सकें.
