के रूप में

X के रूप में means as X: शिक्षक के रूप में (as a teacher), तोहफ़े के रूप में (as a gift).
How It Works
रूप means form, so के रूप में literally means in the form of. It names the role, use or form in which a person or thing appears:
- a job or role: नर्स के रूप में काम करना (to work as a nurse)
- a use: दफ़्तर के रूप में इस्तेमाल करना (to use as an office)
- how someone is seen: एक अच्छे नेता के रूप में याद करना (to remember as a good leader)
Because के रूप में is a postposition, the words before it take their form before a postposition. Most masculine nouns in -आ change to -ए, and so do adjectives in -आ: तोहफ़ा → तोहफ़े के रूप में. Some nouns, such as नेता, do not change, but an adjective with them still does: अच्छे नेता के रूप में.
With verbs like देखना, मानना, जानना and इस्तेमाल करना, the thing described usually takes को: हम इस कमरे को दफ़्तर के रूप में इस्तेमाल करते हैं।
Keep it apart from की तरह (like). वह डॉक्टर के रूप में काम करता है means he works as a doctor. वह डॉक्टर की तरह बात करता है means he talks like a doctor, which suggests he is not one.

तोहफ़ा changes to तोहफ़े before the postposition.

People remember him as a good leader.
The adjective changes to अच्छे; नेता is one of the -आ nouns that stay the same.
- हम इस कमरे को दफ़्तर के रूप में इस्तेमाल करते हैं।
We use this room as an office.
The room takes को, and के रूप में gives the use it is put to.
- वे हिंदी को विदेशी भाषा के रूप में पढ़ाती हैं।
She teaches Hindi as a foreign language.
वे with पढ़ाती हैं refers respectfully to one woman.
