दिन भर / रात भर
All Day or All Night
भर after a time word means the whole of that time.
How It Works
भर after a time word means for the whole of that time:
| Phrase | Meaning |
|---|---|
| दिन भर | all day |
| रात भर | all night |
| हफ़्ते भर | all week |
| महीने भर | for a whole month |
| साल भर | all year |
The phrase works like an adverb and usually needs no postposition: मैं दिन भर घर पर रहा। Masculine nouns in -आ usually take their -ए form before भर, as they do before a postposition: हफ़्ते भर, महीने भर. You will also hear the plain form, as in घंटा भर or महीना भर. You will also see the words written together: दिनभर, रातभर.
After a place, भर means all over: शहर भर में (all over the city), दुनिया भर में (all over the world). Here में usually follows.
After a container it means ...ful: गिलास भर पानी (a glassful of water), मुट्ठी भर लोग (a handful of people).
सारा and पूरा give the same time meaning and are just as common: सारा दिन, पूरी रात.
