सौ / हज़ार / लाख / करोड़
Large Numbers
Big numbers use सौ, हज़ार, लाख and करोड़: दो लाख रुपये (200,000 rupees).
How It Works
| Hindi | Indian style | Value |
|---|---|---|
| सौ | 100 | a hundred |
| हज़ार | 1,000 | a thousand |
| लाख | 1,00,000 | a hundred thousand |
| दस लाख | 10,00,000 | a million |
| करोड़ | 1,00,00,000 | ten million |
Put the count before the unit: तीन सौ, दस हज़ार, पचास लाख. The unit word stays the same, however big the count.
Read from the biggest unit down: 4,500 is चार हज़ार पाँच सौ; 1,20,000 is एक लाख बीस हज़ार.
For a large amount without an exact count, use the -ओं form: हज़ारों (thousands of), लाखों (hundreds of thousands), करोड़ों (tens of millions), as in हज़ारों लोग आए (Thousands of people came). For hundreds, the word is सैकड़ों.
Indian English uses the same words, lakh and crore, so you will see them on price tags and in the news.

Common Mistakes
Adding -ओं to a unit that has an exact count.
मुझे दो हज़ारों रुपये चाहिए।मुझे दो हज़ार रुपये चाहिए।हज़ारों means thousands of, with no exact count. After a number, use plain हज़ार.
