Guessing About an Action in Progress

रहा होगा means must be doing: a guess about an action in progress.

How It Works

When you can't see what someone is doing but can make a good guess, use रहा होगा: रवि अभी काम कर रहा होगा। (Ravi must be working now.)

Build it from the present continuous. Replace है or हैं with the matching form of होगा:

Like other रहा forms, it never takes ने: say वह खाना खा रहा होगा, not उसने.

With a future time phrase, the same form describes an action that will be in progress: कल इस समय हम यात्रा कर रहे होंगे (This time tomorrow we'll be traveling). Words like अभी point to a guess about now; phrases like कल इस समय point to the future.

Compare -ता होगा, which guesses about a habit (वह रोज़ पढ़ता होगा), and -आ होगा, which guesses about something already finished (वह पहुँच गया होगा).

  1. रवि अभी काम कर रहा होगा।

    Ravi must be working right now.

    अभी shows the guess is about this moment.

  2. मीरा अभी पढ़ रही होगी।

    Meera must be studying now.

    पढ़ रही होगी agrees with Meera.

  3. अभी फ़ोन मत करो, बच्चे सो रहे होंगे।

    Don't call now; the kids must be sleeping.

    The plural subject takes रहे होंगे.

  4. बाहर बहुत शोर है। पड़ोस में कोई शादी हो रही होगी।

    It's very noisy outside. There must be a wedding going on in the neighborhood.

    हो रही होगी agrees with feminine शादी.

  5. कल इस समय हम यात्रा कर रहे होंगे।

    This time tomorrow, we'll be traveling.

    With a future time, the same form means will be doing.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the singular होगा with a plural subject.

    बच्चे सो रहे होगा।
    बच्चे सो रहे होंगे।

    होगा agrees with the subject just as रहा does. A masculine plural subject needs रहे होंगे.
