किया जाए

Formal Instructions and Proposals

Level 6Sounds Like kiyā jā'ē

किया जाए means let it be done or it should be done. It appears in notices, minutes and proposals.

How It Works

This is the passive in the subjunctive. It shows up in official instructions, meeting minutes and proposals, where the writer wants something done but does not name the person who will do it.

Thing to be doneFormExample
masculine singularकिया जाएकाम पूरा किया जाए
feminine singularकी जाएचर्चा की जाए
masculine pluralकिए जाएँसुझाव भेजे जाएँ
feminine pluralकी जाएँकिताबें लौटाई जाएँ

When the thing to be done takes को, the verb stops agreeing with it and uses the default masculine singular form: बैठक को टाल दिया जाए (The meeting should be postponed).

Where you will see it:

  • instructions: फ़ॉर्म शुक्रवार तक जमा किया जाए।
  • proposals, often after मेरा सुझाव है कि: ... दोबारा विचार किया जाए।
  • questions about what should be done: क्या बैठक को टाल दिया जाए?

Compare a direct request, which speaks to the doer: यह काम कीजिए (Please do this work).

बैठक has को, so the verb takes the default form दिया जाए.
