Checking Agreement
A final न? or है न? asks the listener to agree: आप कल आएँगे, ना? (You'll come tomorrow, won't you?).
How It Works
English changes its tag to fit the sentence: isn't it, don't you, won't they. Hindi uses one tag for everything:
| Hindi | Meaning |
|---|---|
| It's really hot today, isn't it? |
| You'll come tomorrow, won't you? |
| You've eaten, right? |
The tag can be न, ना, है न or है ना. They all mean the same.
The question expects yes. When you really do not know the answer, ask with
After a command, न or ना softens it into a friendly push: बैठो न (Do sit down), बताओ ना (Come on, tell me).
This न is not negative. For don't, use (Don't sit here).
