ही
Focusing with ही
ही stresses the word before it: मैं ही आया (I'm the one who came), आज ही (this very day).
How It Works
ही stresses the word right before it. It shuts out other choices: this one and no other.
| Hindi | Meaning |
|---|---|
| मैं ही आया। | I'm the one who came. |
| मैं चाय ही पीता हूँ। | I drink only tea. |
| आज ही | this very day, today and no later |
| दो ही मिनट | just two minutes |
English shows this stress with only, just or the voice. Hindi puts ही right after the word that matters. If you move ही, the stress moves too: मैं ही चाय पीता हूँ means I'm the one who drinks tea.
ही joins with some short words: यह + ही = यही (this very), वह + ही = वही (that very). अभी already contains ही (अब + ही), but another ही can be used for extra emphasis.
Compare भी, which adds instead of limiting: मैं भी आया means I came too.

Not Ravi. Reena is the one who'll go.
ही picks out रीना and no one else.
- मैं चाय ही पीता हूँ, कॉफ़ी नहीं।
I drink only tea, not coffee.
ही after चाय limits it to tea.
- मुझे यह काम आज ही ख़त्म करना है।
I have to finish this work this very day.
आज ही means today and no later.
- बस दो ही मिनट लगेंगे।
It'll only take two minutes.
ही after a number means only.
- मुझे यही किताब चाहिए।
This is the book I want.
यह and ही join as यही, this very one.
Common Mistakes
