चाहना
Wanting to Do Something
चाहना with a verb in the -ना form means to want to do something.
How It Works
चाहना is a regular verb, so it takes the usual habitual endings: मैं चाहता हूँ, वह चाहती है, हम चाहते हैं.
Its main use is with another verb in the -ना form. The -ना verb comes right before चाहना, and only चाहना changes for the subject:
| Subject | Man | Woman |
|---|---|---|
For wanting a thing, everyday Hindi says मुझे चाय चाहिए. मैं चाय चाहता हूँ is correct but sounds formal or strong.
Keep चाहना and चाहिए apart. मैं जाना चाहता हूँ means I want to go; मुझे जाना चाहिए means I should go.
With a person as the object, चाहना can also mean to love: वह उसे बहुत चाहता है (He loves her very much).
