का मन करना
Feeling Like Doing Something
Use मन करना or मन होना to say what someone feels like doing.
How It Works
To say what someone feels like doing, Hindi talks about that person's मन (heart, mind). Build the phrase in three parts: whose मन, which action, and मन करना or मन होना.
| Whose | Action | Feeling |
|---|---|---|
| मेरा | घूमने का | मन कर रहा है |
| आपका | कुछ खाने का | मन है? |
| उसका | जाने का | मन नहीं था |
मन is a masculine noun, and everything in the phrase agrees with it: मेरा, का, कर रहा है, था. A woman also says मेरा घूमने का मन कर रहा है. The action takes the -ने form, as it does before any postposition: घूमने का, not घूमना का.
मन कर रहा है is a wish you feel right now, and मन करता है is one you feel often. मन है says it plainly, and मन हुआ means the wish came up at a moment in the past. To give the wish as a whole clause, use कि and the subjunctive: मेरा मन कर रहा है कि आज कहीं घूमने चलें.
Examples (5)
- आज मेरा बाहर खाने का मन है।
I feel like eating out today.
बाहर खाने का मन: the action takes the -ने form and का.
- आज सलमा का काम करने का मन नहीं है।
Salma doesn't feel like working today.
Salma is a woman, but का stays masculine to agree with मन.
- क्या आपका चाय पीने का मन है?
Would you like some tea?
A polite offer: literally, does your heart want to drink tea?
- बारिश देखकर मेरा पकौड़े खाने का मन हुआ।
Seeing the rain, I felt like eating pakoras.
मन हुआ: the wish came up at a moment in the past.
- मेरा मन करता है कि सब छोड़कर पहाड़ों पर चला जाऊँ।
Sometimes I just want to drop everything and head off to the mountains.
With कि, the wish is a whole clause in the subjunctive.
Common Mistakes
Making the phrase agree with a female speaker.
मेरी घूमने की मन कर रही है।मेरा घूमने का मन कर रहा है।मन is masculine, so मेरा, का and कर रहा है stay masculine for every speaker.
Leaving the action in the -ना form.
मेरा घूमना का मन है।मेरा घूमने का मन है।Before का, the action takes the -ने form.
