मुझे ... की ज़रूरत है = I need ...: मुझे आपकी मदद की ज़रूरत है.

How It Works

ज़रूरत is a noun meaning need. So मुझे पानी की ज़रूरत है is literally to me there is a need of water.

The link word is always की, because ज़रूरत is feminine. The thing before it takes the form used before a postposition: पैसे becomes पैसों की, कुर्सियाँ becomes कुर्सियों की.

Needing to do something. Use the -ने form of the verb: आपको चिंता करने की ज़रूरत नहीं है (You don't need to worry).

General truths. Use होती है for things that are always true: पौधों को पानी की ज़रूरत होती है (Plants need water).

Compare चाहिए. मुझे पानी चाहिए and मुझे पानी की ज़रूरत है both mean I need water. चाहिए is shorter and more common for everyday requests. की ज़रूरत है stresses that something is really needed.

    For an action, use the -ने form.

    Call me whenever you need anything.

    ज़रूरत can also stand on its own.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a plain subject.

    मैं आपकी मदद की ज़रूरत हूँ।
    मुझे आपकी मदद की ज़रूरत है।

    The person who needs takes को. मैं ... हूँ would say that I am the need.

  • Using का before ज़रूरत.

    मुझे पानी का ज़रूरत है।
    मुझे पानी की ज़रूरत है।

    ज़रूरत is feminine, so the link word is की.
