जो ... वह

Relative Clauses with जो

Level 3Sounds Like jō ... vaha

जो ..., वह ... = the one who ..., he or she ...: जो लड़का आया था, वह मेरा भाई है.

How It Works

English puts who or which right after the noun: the boy who came. Hindi usually puts a full जो clause first and then points back with वह:

  • जो लड़का आया था, वह मेरा भाई है। (The boy who came is my brother.)

Read it as: which boy came, he is my brother.

Singular and plural. Use वह for one and वे for more than one. Each clause agrees on its own: जो लड़कियाँ बाहर हैं, वे मेरी बहनें हैं.

People and things. जो covers who, which and that: जो किताब मेज़ पर है, वह मेरी है (The book that is on the table is mine). With no noun, जो means what or the one who: जो आप कह रहे हैं, वह सच है (What you're saying is true).

Before a postposition. जो changes to जिस (singular) or जिन (plural), just as वह changes to उस: जिस लड़के से तुम बात करते हो, वह मेरा दोस्त है. You will practice these forms at the next level.

Use जो only to link clauses. To ask who, use कौन.

Common Mistakes

  • Using कौन as a linking word.

    कौन लड़का बाहर है, वह मेरा भाई है।
    जो लड़का बाहर है, वह मेरा भाई है।

कौन asks a question. To describe someone inside a sentence, use जो.
