Ever Since

जब से means ever since: जब से मैं यहाँ आई हूँ, बहुत ख़ुश हूँ (I've been very happy since I came here).

How It Works

जब से introduces the moment something started, and the main clause says what has been true since then. तब से can open the main clause, but it is often left out.

Hindi uses the present where English uses have been: जब से मैं यहाँ आई हूँ, (तब से) बहुत ख़ुश हूँ (I've been very happy since I came here). The जब से clause usually has a completed form such as आई हूँ, गई है or शुरू किया.

For a story in the past, both clauses move into the past: जब से उसे नौकरी मिली थी, वह बहुत व्यस्त रहता था. The clauses can also swap, with तब से in the first one: मैं उसे तब से जानता हूँ, जब से हम स्कूल में थे.

With a time word, से alone is enough. With a whole clause, use जब से. Without से, जब means when and marks a single moment: जब मैं आया, वह सो रहा था.

    Ever since I started yoga, my back pain has eased.

    जब से names the starting point.

  2. जब से वह गई है, घर ख़ाली-ख़ाली लगता है।

    Since she left, the house has felt so empty.

    The main clause is in the present because the feeling continues.

  3. जब से बारिश शुरू हुई है, तब से बिजली नहीं है।

    There's been no power since the rain started.

    तब से opens the main clause here.

  4. मैं उसे तब से जानता हूँ, जब से हम स्कूल में थे।

    I've known him since we were in school.

    The clauses can swap, with तब से in the first one.

  5. जब से उसे नौकरी मिली थी, वह बहुत व्यस्त रहता था।

    Ever since he got the job, he had been very busy.

    In a past story, both clauses use past forms.

Common Mistakes

  • Using जब without से for ever since.

    जब मैं दिल्ली आया हूँ, बहुत ख़ुश हूँ।
    जब से मैं दिल्ली आया हूँ, बहुत ख़ुश हूँ।

    जब alone means when, for one moment. For ever since, you need जब से.

  • Putting a state that is still true in the past.

    जब से मैं यहाँ आई हूँ, मैं ख़ुश थी।
    जब से मैं यहाँ आई हूँ, मैं ख़ुश हूँ।

    If the state still holds, the main clause uses the present, where English says have been.
