Actions Happening Now

Level 1Sounds Like rahā hai, rahī hai aura rahē haiṁ

The bare stem plus रहा, रही or रहे and a form of to be describes an action going on right now.

How It Works

The progressive has three parts: the bare verb stem, a form of रहा, and हूँ, है, हो or हैं. The stem never changes. रहा changes for gender and number, and the last word changes for the person.

SubjectMan or masculineWoman or feminine
मैंखा रहा हूँखा रही हूँ
तू, यह, वहखा रहा हैखा रही है
तुमखा रहे होखा रही हो
हम, आप, ये, वेखा रहे हैंखा रही हैं

Use it for what is happening as you speak: बारिश हो रही है (It's raining). Compare the habitual present, which describes routines: मैं रोज़ चाय पीता हूँ (I drink tea every day), but अभी मैं चाय पी रहा हूँ (I'm drinking tea right now).

With a time word for later, it can describe a fixed plan, as in English: हम कल दिल्ली जा रहे हैं (We're going to Delhi tomorrow).

In the negative, the last word is often dropped: मैं टीवी नहीं देख रहा (I'm not watching TV).

  5. आप क्या कर रहे हैं?

    आप takes रहे हैं.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the -ना form before रहा.

    मैं हिंदी पढ़ना रहा हूँ।
    मैं हिंदी पढ़ रहा हूँ।

Only the bare stem goes before रहा: पढ़, not पढ़ना.
