Clock Times

Level 1Sounds Like kitanē bajē haiṁ

बजे after a number gives a clock time, and कितने बजे asks what time it is or at what time.

How It Works

To ask the time, say In everyday speech you will also hear क्या बजा है? and टाइम क्या हुआ है?

To answer, use the number with (It's three o'clock). One o'clock is singular: एक बजा है.

To say at what time, use the number and बजे with no other word: मैं सात बजे उठता हूँ (I get up at seven). To ask at what time, say

Half and quarter hours have their own words:

सवा तीन बजेquarter past three
साढ़े तीन बजेhalf past three
पौने चार बजेquarter to four
डेढ़ बजेhalf past one
ढाई बजेhalf past two

Parts of the day make the time clear: सुबह आठ बजे (8 a.m.), रात आठ बजे (8 p.m.).

Do not confuse बजे with घंटे: तीन बजे is three o'clock, but तीन घंटे is three hours.
