कहा जाता है
It Is Said
कहा जाता है कि ... means it is said that ...: a claim people make, with no named source.
How It Works
This frame lets you report what people generally say, believe or report, without naming them. It is common in history, travel writing, legends and the news.
| Frame | Meaning |
|---|---|
| कहा जाता है कि | it is said that |
| माना जाता है कि | it is believed that |
| बताया जाता है कि | it is reported that |
| कहा जाता था कि | it used to be said that |
| बताया जा रहा है कि | reports say that (news) |
The frame always stays masculine singular, because what is said is the whole कि clause. The claim after कि is an ordinary sentence with its own subject and tense: कहा जाता है कि यहाँ एक राजा रहता था।
Compare कहा गया है कि, which reports one particular statement: नियमों में कहा गया है कि ... (The rules state that ...).
The frame keeps the source vague. Writers use it for legends and common beliefs, and news reports use it for information that is not yet confirmed.
