के ऊपर / के नीचे
Above and Below
के ऊपर means above or on top of, and के नीचे means under or below.
How It Works
Both phrases follow the thing you use as the reference point:
- पेड़ के नीचे (under the tree)
- पंखे के नीचे (under the fan)
- अलमारी के ऊपर (on top of the cupboard)
- बादलों के ऊपर (above the clouds)
The noun changes as before any postposition (पंखा → पंखे के नीचे), and के stays के whatever the noun's gender. With pronouns: मेरे ऊपर, उसके नीचे.
पर or के ऊपर? For something lying on a surface, पर is the everyday choice: किताब मेज़ पर है. Use के ऊपर for something higher up that is not touching (मेज़ के ऊपर एक बल्ब है), or to stress on top of: डिब्बों के ऊपर मत बैठो.
Alone, ऊपर and नीचे mean up and down, and also upstairs and downstairs: ऊपर आइए (Come upstairs), दादी नीचे हैं (Grandma is downstairs).
ऊपर also has an everyday figurative use: यह तुम्हारे ऊपर है (It's up to you).
