Future Actions

Level 1Sounds Like gā, -gī aura -gē

The future adds -गा, -गी or -गे to a verb form that already shows the person: मैं जाऊँगा, वह आएगी.

How It Works

The future has two parts. First, add an ending for the person to the stem: -ऊँ for मैं, -ए for तू, यह and वह, -ओ for तुम, and -एँ for हम, आप, ये and वे. Then add -गा, -गी or -गे to show gender and number.

SubjectMan or masculineWoman or feminine
मैंजाऊँगाजाऊँगी
तू, यह, वहजाएगाजाएगी
तुमजाओगेजाओगी
हम, आप, ये, वेजाएँगेजाएँगी

The same endings work with every regular verb: बोलूँगा, बोलेगा, बोलोगे, बोलेंगे. After a consonant, -ए- and -एँ- are written as vowel signs, as in बोलेगा and बोलेंगे.

A few very common verbs are shorter: देना gives दूँगा, देगा, देंगे; लेना gives लूँगा, लेगा, लेंगे; होना gives होगा and होंगे.

Use the future for plans, promises and predictions: मैं कल फ़ोन करूँगा, कल बारिश होगी. For a fixed plan, Hindi also uses रहा है: मैं कल जा रहा हूँ. The future can also mark a guess about now, as in वह घर पर होगा (He must be at home); that use has its own entry.

    हम takes जाएँगे.

Common Mistakes

  • Adding -गा straight to the stem.

    मैं यह काम कल करगा।
    मैं यह काम कल करूँगा।

Add the person ending first. For मैं, कर becomes करूँ before -गा.
