में
In or Inside
घर में means in the house, and दिल्ली में means in Delhi.
How It Works
में means in or inside. Like all postpositions, it comes after the noun: घर में (in the house), बैग में (in the bag).
- Inside something: पानी गिलास में है (The water is in the glass).
- Cities, countries and areas: मैं दिल्ली में रहती हूँ (I live in Delhi).
- Languages: हिंदी में बोलिए (Please speak in Hindi).
- Time within: मैं दस मिनट में आता हूँ (I'll be there in ten minutes).
The noun before में takes its form before a postposition. A masculine noun ending in -आ changes to -ए: कमरा becomes कमरे में. Other singular nouns stay the same: किताब में, घर में. Plurals end in -ओं: कमरों में.
Watch the spelling. में (in) has one stroke above the letter, and मैं (I) has two.
For on a surface, use पर instead: किताब मेज़ पर है (The book is on the table).
