कराना / करवाना
Having Something Done
A -वाना verb, and कराना from करना, means having someone else do something.
How It Works
Use a -वाना verb when you get something done by someone else, such as a haircut, a repair or a new dress. The sentence can have these parts:
| Arranger | Worker + से | Thing | Verb |
|---|---|---|---|
| रीना ने | मैकेनिक से | कार | ठीक करवाई |
| मैंने | नाई से | बाल | कटवाए |
The worker is often left out: मैंने बाल कटवाए (I got a haircut).
Many verbs form a chain: बनना (be made), बनाना (make), बनवाना (have made). Some change a vowel on the way: खुलना, खोलना, खुलवाना; धुलना, धोना, धुलवाना. For करना, both कराना and करवाना mean to have done. Most other -आना verbs are ordinary verbs with their own meaning, such as बनाना (to make) and पढ़ाना (to teach).
The -वाना verb takes an object, so completed forms use ने and agree with the thing: रीना ने कार ठीक करवाई. Other tenses agree with the arranger: वह हर महीने बाल कटवाती है.
