उठना after a verb stem shows a sudden reaction or something bursting out.

How It Works

On its own, उठना means to rise or get up. After another verb's stem, it adds a sense of something welling up suddenly: a cry, a shiver, a sound, a burst of joy.

  • चौंक उठना: to jump in surprise
  • चिल्ला उठना: to cry out
  • काँप उठना: to tremble, shudder
  • खिल उठना: to light up (a face), to bloom
  • गूँज उठना: to ring out, echo

The main verb stays a bare stem, and उठना agrees with the subject: रीना चौंक उठी, बच्चे चिल्ला उठे. Since उठना takes no object, the doer never takes ने.

उठना and पड़ना overlap, since both can show a sudden reaction. पड़ना is the usual choice with रोना and हँसना (रो पड़ी, हँस पड़े), while उठना suits a feeling or sound that rises and spreads. Learn the common pairs as set phrases rather than adding उठना to any verb.
