-ने से पहले
Before Doing Something
-ने से पहले = before doing: सोने से पहले (before going to sleep).
How It Works
से पहले means before. After the -ने form of a verb it means before doing: खाना खाने से पहले हाथ धोओ (Wash your hands before eating).
| Infinitive | Before doing |
|---|---|
| सोना | सोने से पहले |
| जाना | जाने से पहले |
| आना | आने से पहले |
No tense inside. English says before I go, before I went or before going. Hindi always uses the same -ने form. The main verb shows the time: मैं सोने से पहले पढ़ता हूँ (a habit), आने से पहले फ़ोन कर देना (an instruction).
Who does it. Usually the same person does both actions. To name someone else, put a possessive before the verb: मेरे आने से पहले बैठक शुरू हो गई (The meeting started before I arrived). Use मेरे, तुम्हारे, रीमा के and so on, always ending in -े.
The ने in सोने is part of the verb. It has nothing to do with the ने after a subject, as in रीमा ने.
In speech you will also hear के पहले, with the same meaning.
