पसंद है
Liking Something
मुझे X पसंद है says I like X: the person who likes takes को, and the liked thing is the subject.
How It Works
Hindi says I like tea as मुझे चाय पसंद है, roughly to me, tea is pleasing. The person who likes takes को, often in a short form like मुझे, आपको or उसे. The liked thing is the subject.
Because the liked thing is the subject, it decides the verb:
- One thing: मुझे यह गाना पसंद है.
- Several things: मुझे ये गाने पसंद हैं.
The person's gender never changes the sentence. A man and a woman both say मुझे क्रिकेट पसंद है.
To say what you like doing, use the -ना form, which counts as one thing: मुझे तैरना पसंद है (I like swimming).
For the negative, put नहीं before है: मुझे मिर्च पसंद नहीं है. In speech, है is often dropped: मुझे मिर्च पसंद नहीं.
You will also hear पसंद करना, which works like an ordinary verb with the person as subject. It is common when the liked one is a person: वह तुम्हें पसंद करता है (He likes you).
