अपना / अपनी / अपने
One's Own
अपना refers back to the subject: मीरा अपनी किताब पढ़ती है (Meera reads her own book).
How It Works
अपना means one's own: my own, your own, his own, their own. Hindi uses it whenever the owner is the subject of the sentence.
| Hindi | Meaning |
|---|---|
| मैं अपना काम करता हूँ। | I do my work. |
| तुम अपनी किताब लाओ। | Bring your book. |
| वे अपने बच्चों के साथ आए। | They came with their children. |
This matters most with वह. रवि अपनी किताब पढ़ता है means Ravi reads his own book. रवि उसकी किताब पढ़ता है means Ravi reads someone else's book.
With मैं as the subject, standard Hindi also uses अपना: मैं अपना काम करता हूँ. You may hear मेरा in casual speech, but अपना is the form to learn.
The ending follows the owned thing, not the owner: अपना (masculine), अपनी (feminine), अपने (masculine plural or before a postposition). It works with a ने subject too: राहुल ने अपनी माँ को फ़ोन किया.
