Somewhere, Nowhere and Anywhere
कहीं is somewhere, कहीं नहीं is nowhere and कहीं भी is anywhere: मैं कहीं नहीं जा रहा.
How It Works
कहीं is the place word in the same family as कोई (someone), कुछ (something) and कभी (ever). All four build their forms the same way.
| Person | Thing | Place | Time | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
In a question it means anywhere:
For nowhere, put नहीं in its usual place before the verb: मैं कहीं नहीं गया (I didn't go anywhere). (I didn't go anywhere at all).
In a positive sentence, कहीं भी means any place will do: आप कहीं भी बैठ सकते हैं. For somewhere else, say कहीं और.
Keep कहीं and कहाँ apart. कहाँ ends in -आँ and asks where; कहीं ends in -ईं and says somewhere.
