Me and You Before Postpositions

Before से, पर, में and तक, मैं becomes मुझ: वह मुझसे बड़ा है (He is older than me).

How It Works

Before से, पर, में and तक, the pronoun मैं changes to मुझ and तू changes to तुझ. से and में are written joined to the pronoun; पर and तक are often written as separate words.

तक works the same way: मुझ तक (as far as me). With को, मैं and तू use their own short forms, मुझे and तुझे.

Postpositions that begin with के or की work differently. They take the possessive: मेरे लिए (for me), मेरे साथ (with me), तुम्हारी तरफ़ (toward you). Never say मुझ के लिए.

Many verbs need one of these postpositions, so the forms come up all the time: मुझसे पूछो (ask me), मुझ पर हँसो मत (don't laugh at me), वह मुझसे लंबा है (he is taller than me).

  1. वह मुझसे दो साल बड़ा है।

    He's two years older than me.

    मैं plus से becomes मुझसे.

  2. मुझ पर भरोसा रखो।

    Trust me.

    भरोसा takes पर, so मैं becomes मुझ.

  3. मैं तुझसे बहुत प्यार करती हूँ।

    I love you so much.

    तू becomes तुझ; a mother might say this to her child.

  4. क्या आप हमसे नाराज़ हैं?

    Are you upset with us?

    हम does not change before से.

  5. यह ख़बर मुझ तक नहीं पहुँची।

    This news never reached me.

    तक also turns मैं into मुझ.

Common Mistakes

  • Keeping मैं before a postposition.

    वह मैं से बड़ा है।
    वह मुझसे बड़ा है।

    Before से, पर, में and तक, मैं always changes to मुझ.

  • Using मुझ with के लिए or के साथ.

    यह मुझ के लिए है।
    यह मेरे लिए है।

    Postpositions that start with के or की take the possessive: मेरे लिए, मेरे साथ, मेरी तरफ़.
